Cochrane Oral Health is delighted to announce its unofficial individualised group impact factor (IF) for 2017. The annual IF is an international measure of the impact research journals have in their respective field, and is the ratio of citations in a single year to total number of citable publications from each journal in the preceding 2 years (e.g. citations in 2017 resulting from publications in 2015 and 2016).
When Thomson Reuters analyse journals' impact each year, all Cochrane Review Groups (CRG) publications are assessed singularly under the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) within the Medicine, General & Internal category. The 2017 Impact Factor for the CDSR (overall for all Cochrane groups) is 6.754 (1,764 publications cited 11,914 times), consequently, the CDSR now ranks 12th of the 154 journals in the Medicine, General & Internal category.
This information is useful for our publishers, Wiley, but gives little indication of how each CRG's research output fares alongside competing journals for their discipline. Consequently, we latterly receive an unofficial individualised IF each year.
Cochrane Oral Health's unofficial individualised impact factor for 2017 is 5.340 (47 publications cited 251 times; increasing from 3.854 in 2016, where 41 publications were cited 158 times), and ranks our research very slightly beneath the 2nd placed journal (Journal of Dental Research) in the listed 90 journals under the Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine category. This means that a review published by Cochrane Oral Health in 2015 or 2016 was cited, on average, 5.340 times in 2017.
